The balance between mining and conservation

by Paul Vogel

Tuesday, 19 November 2013

view article via link below

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-18/vogel-mining-conservation-balance/5099404

"The balance between developing WA's mineral wealth and protecting its unique plants and animals has swung too far in favour of the miners. It's time to put things right, Paul Vogel writes."

EXTRACTS FROM THE ARTICLE RELATING TO BIF RANGES

"Taking just one example, the Banded Iron Formation Ranges, in inland WA, are areas of extraordinary natural heritage and scientific value."

"By an unfortunate coincidence, the ranges with the highest conservation values are those initially being targeted for iron ore development and therefore under the greatest threat."

"Despite well-recognised conservation values, an appropriate balance between development and conservation of the Ranges has not occurred. No Banded Iron Formation Ranges are protected from mining development through secure (Class A or National Park) conservation tenure."

"At least four of the development proposals recommended by the EPA for approval in the last seven years were recommended on the basis that an area of equivalent or greater conservation value would be conserved within a National Park or Class A Nature Reserve."

"No such reserves have been established. And despite commitments by governments to create Class A Nature Reserves or National Parks in the Die Hardy ranges, north-west of Kalgoorlie, and on Mungada Ridge, south-east of Geraldton, this outcome has not eventuated."
